High-level disinfection is specifically required for semi-critical instruments. These are tools that come into contact with mucous membranes or non-intact skin, which poses a risk for infection transmission if not properly disinfected. Examples of semi-critical items include endoscopes, respiratory therapy equipment, and any other instruments that may penetrate the skin or mucous membranes but do not enter sterile tissue.

Critical devices, on the other hand, require sterilization because they enter sterile body areas and carry a higher risk of infection. Non-critical items, which only touch intact skin and do not require as stringent disinfection practices, typically only need cleaning and low-level disinfection. While all instruments require some level of infection control, the unique nature of semi-critical instruments necessitates high-level disinfection to minimize the risk of infection during medical procedures.
